The Quantum Theory of Fields Vols 1-3

The name Weinberg within Quantum Field Theory circles is synonymous for many reasons.

Getting the obvious one out of the way first; Weinberg himself was a Nobel Laureate and a highly regarded researcher who advanced our knowledge of theoretical particle physics (along side Abdus Salem and Sheldon Glashow) with the unification of the weak nuclear and electromagnetic forces to form electroweak theory.

Secondly, Weinberg possessed a renown as an educator of theoretical physics within the community. Principally, Weinberg produced a three-volume series on Quantum Field Theory, that has remained a crowning compendium on Modern Quantum Field Theory.

The first in this series of books explored the foundations of Quantum Field Theory. First, beginning with a historical exploration of the field, before delving into the so-called basics: from canonical methods to the path integral approach of Quantum Field Theory.

In succession, the 2nd volume deals with more advanced techniques (or modern as they were referred to when the book had been written) focusing on ghosts fields, effective theories and non-perturbative aspects. Finally, the 3rd edition draws the conclusions and methods from the previous instalments and applies them to the setting of supersymmetry.

What makes Weinberg so special is his unique interpretation of the subject. These 3 volumes are filled facts and insights that are seldom found elsewhere. These insights are further supported by the numerous bibliographies attached at the end of each chapter; which is especially important if one is interested in consulting the primary historical sources of Quantum Field Theory.

I recommend this series of books to any serious graduate student and above wishing to get a more foundational understanding of Quantum Field Theory. It is most certainly not recommend to the beginner theorist and is especially not suited for the palette of a novice.
